Tanghulu, also known as bingtanghulu, is a traditional Chinese snack. It usually use hawthorn berries as the base fruits. The sweet and sour taste of the hawthorn berries combined with the sugary coating creates a delicious and unique flavor.
Since I can’t find hawthorn berries in the supermarket, I am using strawberry in my Tanghulu.

Prepare Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins
Total time: 15 mins
Ingredients:
- A box of strawberry
- 100g sugar
- 100g water
- Some bamboo skewers
Directions:
- Rinse the strawberry and dry the strawberry with paper towel. Then remove the stems.
- Pop the strawberry onto the bamboo skewer.
- Add the sugar and water into a pot. Turn the heat on high.
- Once the water starts to bubble, turn the heat to medium low.
- Once the syrup starts to show a light yellow color, turn off the heat immediately.
- Quickly dip the strawberry into the syrup and put it on a baking sheet to cool
- Once completely cool down, the tanghulu is ready!
Tips:
- It’s important to pat the fruits dry.
- Once the water starts to bubble, it’s important to turn the heat to medium low.
- Pay attention to the syrup color. It’s easy to undercook or overcook the syrup.
- For more crispy shell, you can set the tanghulu in refrigerator for about 10 mins.
